The people of Velandir have adapted to the cold climate, yet warming their bodies by the fire is not only a survival choice, but hold cultural significance as a time and place for sharing stories.
Darcus, however, sees this as a big problem, since chopping wood and splitting logs is not all that fun. To fully enjoy the glory of felling a large tree, one must exert strenuous effort to the point where it's hard to tell if ones dripping snow or sweat. But, the firewood created in this way doesn't last long and is quickly used up.
The people of Velandir have a unique culture of entrusting the control of bonfires or braziers to the children. Darcus complains about the youngsters who believe that the stronger the fire, the better, and waste precious firewood. Despite his grumbling, he is serious when it comes to lumbering, and although young, he is the best lumberjack in Velandir.
